The Challenge Continues
The passage of Proposition 8 on November 4, 2008, which ostensibly overturns the right of same sex couples to marry in the State of California, is not the end of the story. Protests continue to take place across the nation and multiple challenges are pending in the Courts.
Governor Schwartzenegger, Mayor Villaraigosa, California Attorney General Jerry Brown, national political leaders, California teachers, nurses and physicians unions, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and a long, long list of other leaders, organizations and civic groups oppose Prop 8’s attempt to ban same-sex marriage (see http://www.noonprop8.com/about/who-opposes-prop-8 ).
A wide majority of San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles voters oppose Prop 8. Post election polls reveal that an overwhelming 63% of Valley ballots were cast against Prop 8; in the City of Los Angeles as a whole, 54% rejected Prop 8.
The San Fernando Valley was born from optimism, innovation, diversity and family values. It has become a true microcosm of the world and a impressive example of community enrichment through diversity and multicultural appreciation and acceptance.
We at ValleyModern always welcome same sex couples and families and continue to look forward to a day when the fundamental civil rights of all people are given equal protection under the law, and when the wise Constitutional principle of separation of church and state is not so easily subverted.
If a simple majority vote is all that is necessary to strip away fundamental human rights, we have entered a quagmire where no right is safe.
